The Art of Slow Mornings: Why Your First Hour Matters
We all have those moments when we know the day ahead is going to require our full presence
The expectations. The fires we need to put out. The conversations we don't want to have. The challenges that come with growth, change, and simply moving forward in life.
But every once in a while, it is not all doom and gloom.
Because deep down, we know that how we treat ourselves during the first hour after waking up can set the momentum for the entire day.
The first hour is an opportunity. It is a chance to pause before the world starts asking things of us. It is a chance to intentionally decide how we want to show up.
Over time, I have found that a few simple practices can completely transform my mornings.
1. Make Your Bed
I am pretty sure everyone has heard this advice at some point—whether from a YouTube video, social media, or a motivational speaker.
And while it may sound simple, there is something powerful about making your bed.
It is the first promise you keep to yourself that day.
You begin the morning with a small accomplishment, creating a sense of order before the chaos of the day begins. And let's be honest, if the day doesn't go as planned, there is something comforting about returning home to a clean, welcoming bed.
Sometimes, the smallest acts of care make the biggest difference.
2. Get Your Heart Rate Up
There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting your heart rate up in the morning.
For some people, this means heading to the gym. For others, it may be a morning walk with the dogs, stretching, yoga, or even dancing in the kitchen to your favorite song.
Movement shifts energy.
It wakes up both the body and the mind. It reminds us that we are alive, capable, and ready to take on whatever the day brings.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is simply to move.
3. Say Yes to Treating Yourself
For many people, treating themselves starts with a good breakfast—or an even better cup of coffee.
There is nothing wrong with becoming a bit of a coffee connoisseur.
Experiment. Sample. Enjoy the foam, the cinnamon sprinkles, or even the occasional splurge on a new coffee machine.
This is your first hour.
Why not make it enjoyable?
Sometimes self-care isn't complicated. Sometimes it is as simple as sitting quietly with your favorite mug, breathing deeply, and allowing yourself to be fully present before the day begins.
Slow mornings are not about having more time.
They are about being intentional with the time we already have.
This is your morning. Protect it, enjoy it, and create a ritual that brings you peace, clarity, and purpose.
Special Note:
You might surprise yourself and discover that your inner coffee connoisseur has been there all along—simply waiting for the right tools and a quiet moment to emerge.
