Pivot

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a "pivot" is defined as "a person, thing, or factor having a major or central role, function, or effect" or "the action of turning on or as if on a pivot."

I have often thought that life itself is one long series of pivots.

Some are small and almost unnoticeable. Others are so significant that they alter the entire course of our lives.

A career change.

The end of a relationship.

A move to a new city.

A new business idea.

A shift in values.

Whatever form it takes, a pivot asks us to do one thing: change direction.

Why Can a Pivot Be Beneficial?

There are moments in life when continuing down the same road no longer feels right.

Sometimes the signs are subtle. We feel restless, uninspired, or disconnected from who we are becoming. Other times, life makes the decision for us through unexpected circumstances, closed doors, or opportunities we never saw coming.

A pivot gives us permission to realign.

It allows us to reassess where we are, where we want to go, and whether our current path is still serving us.

More importantly, a pivot invites growth.

Growth rarely occurs inside our comfort zone.

The Consequences of a Pivot

Let's be honest. Pivots are not always easy.

A pivot often requires a full commitment.

It asks us to soar beyond what we are used to. To leave behind familiarity, certainty, and sometimes even the identity we have built for ourselves.

There can be fear.

Doubt.

Financial uncertainty.

Questions from others.

Moments where you wonder if you are making the right decision.

A pivot can feel lonely because not everyone will understand the change before they see the outcome.

But that does not mean the pivot is wrong.

It simply means you are moving.

The Opportunities Within the Pivot

Every pivot carries opportunity.

A pivot asks us to tap into our natural instincts.

To trust ourselves.

To become curious again.

Most importantly, it reminds us that nothing is ever wasted.

Every success.

Every disappointment.

Every lesson.

Every relationship.

Every experience.

It all comes with us.

We often underestimate how much our past prepares us for our future.

Skills transfer.

Wisdom compounds.

Experience matters.

Nothing is ever wasted.

And what may feel like a dramatic change in direction today may simply be another piece of the larger story unfolding.

One pivot often leads to another.

And then another.

Without even realizing it, you begin moving closer and closer to where you were always meant to be.

Trust the Process

I have come to believe that the universe has a way of guiding us, even when we cannot yet see the destination.

Closed doors create space for new opportunities.

Missed opportunities redirect us.

Unexpected changes invite expansion.

What is meant for you will not pass you by.

And sometimes, the greatest act of courage is simply having the faith to pivot.

Because the destination you are seeking may only become visible once you have the courage to change direction.

Special Note:

Writing has always been one of the ways I process change. Putting thoughts on paper can bring clarity to ideas that feel uncertain and help us recognize patterns we may have otherwise missed.

If you find yourself standing at a crossroads, consider taking a few quiet moments to write. You may discover that the answers you are searching for have been within you all along.
